France has many landmarks and landscapes that inspire the imagination behind books, art, movies and series. The setting for Emmy and the Iris: A Fanciful French Twist on the Secret Garden is none other than the Château d’Amondans in the eastern Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, and more specifically, in the Doubs sub-region.

The Château d’Amondans dates back to the 16th century. Since 1960, it has been a holiday camp for a car company, a Michelin-starred restaurant and an event venue. Today it hosts all types of celebrations in its Espace Beltane, a business activity similar to Emmy’s adoptive family’s enterprise in Emmy and the Iris: A Fanciful French Twist on The Secret Garden. Weddings there have a particular flair, and people from around the world go there to celebrate their special day, knowing that the staff takes particular care in catering to every detail on their wish list. In fact, I myself had a magical day for my own wedding there!

The château itself is quite quaint compared to the grand castle in which Emmy ends up living. However, the park, grounds and countryside surrounding the castle were used as inspiration for the books. The rolling green hills, many animals and wildlife, vineyards stretching to the horizon, a fountain surrounded by footpaths leading to the castle entrance and surrounded by gorgeous flowers in many bright colors… life in the French countryside is a simple but fanciful, whimsical journey.

You can find out more about the château here.
